Belgian Promenade Walk
2.2 miles (3.5 km)This walk follows the Belgian Promenade on Anglesey, a level path that runs along the shore at Menai Bridge with wide views across the Menai Strait towards Bangor the mountains of Snowdonia.
The promenade is backed by the tidal shoreline and wooded slopes, making it a pleasant and accessible walk with constant views of the strait, passing boats and the dramatic backdrop of the mainland hills.
The Belgian Promenade takes its name from the Belgian refugees who were housed in the area during the First World War after fleeing the German invasion of Belgium.... Many were accommodated locally, and the promenade was built during this period as part of a seafront employment scheme. It remains a quiet reminder of this lesser-known part of local and national history, set beside one of Wales’s most famous waterways.
The route lies close to the landmark Menai Suspension Bridge, with regular viewpoints towards the bridge and the wooded shoreline on both sides of the strait. Wildlife is often seen along the water’s edge, including gulls, cormorants, herons and occasionally seals. The walk works well as a gentle out-and-back stroll and can easily be extended into Menai Bridge town or linked with longer coastal routes.
