Simonsbath to Cow Castle Walk
7.6 miles (12.2 km)This circular walk visits Cow Castle and Landacre Bridge from Simonsbath in Exmoor.
Starting from the car park in Simonsbath the route first heads south along the Two Moors Way to Cow Castle.
You continue south east visiting Landacre Bridge before returning on a country trail that runs parallel to the Two Moors Way.
As you follow the River Barle, you will encounter the impressive remains of Cow Castle, an Iron Age hillfort perched on a dramatic gritstone outcrop. This ancient site offers a commanding view of the surrounding moorland, as it is naturally protected by a steep drop-off and the bend of the river below.... The sense of isolation here is palpable, providing a glimpse into the defensive strategies of Exmoor’s earliest inhabitants while offering a perfect spot to rest and take in the rugged scenery.
Further along the trail, the path leads to the iconic Landacre Bridge, a Grade II listed structure featuring five elegant pointed arches. This medieval stone bridge is one of the most photographed landmarks in the National Park, spanning a wide, shallow stretch of the Barle that is popular with paddlers and picnickers. The surrounding riverside meadows provide a soft contrast to the high moorland, creating a peaceful atmosphere before you begin the return leg of the journey.
The landscape between these two landmarks is a quintessential Exmoor experience, defined by rolling hills, hidden valleys, and the constant presence of the winding river. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife, as this area is a well-known habitat for wild red deer and hardy Exmoor ponies. The trek back along the parallel country trail provides a different perspective of the valley, ensuring the trek remains visually engaging until you arrive back in the quiet charm of Simonsbath.
