Hunstanton to Brancaster Walk
9.6 miles (15.5 km)This coastal trek from Hunstanton to Brancaster follows a stunning stretch of the Norfolk Coast Path, offering a diverse journey through some of East Anglia's most iconic landscapes.
The walk begins at the famous striped cliffs of Hunstanton, where layers of red and white chalk provide a dramatic backdrop to the shoreline.... As you head east, the terrain transitions from these rugged heights into the expansive, sandy dunes of Old Hunstanton and Holme-next-the-Sea. This area is a significant geological and archaeological site, famously known as the location where the prehistoric timber circle, Seahenge, was discovered emerging from the peat.
The route is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, particularly as it passes through the Holme Dunes National Nature Reserve. This vital habitat of saltmarshes, reedbeds, and scrub is home to a wealth of wildlife; you may spot natterjack toads in the slacks or hear the booming call of bitterns in the reeds. During the winter months, the skies are often filled with the sight of thousands of pink-footed geese migrating from Iceland, while the summer brings a vibrant display of sea lavender across the marshes. The sense of openness here is immense, with the vast Norfolk skies providing a constant sense of scale as you move toward the tidal inlets of Thornham.
The final leg of the walk leads you into the historic village of Brancaster, known for its sprawling sandy beach and its Roman heritage as the site of the Branodunum fort. The path skirts the edge of the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, where the marshland and tidal creeks create a complex, shifting landscape. As you arrive at Brancaster Staithe, the sight of traditional fishing boats and sailing dinghies in the harbour captures the timeless maritime character of the North Norfolk coast. This linear walk, covering approximately 10 miles, perfectly balances raw natural beauty with the quiet charm of traditional coastal villages.
