Kenilworth Greenway

This is easy walk or cycle follows the Kenilworth Greenway through Kenilworth to Burton Green.
The linear country park runs through the south Warwickshire countryside along a former railway line.... Covering around 16 hectares, much of the Greenway is owned by Warwickshire County Council. It is also a permissive bridleway, providing access for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Kissing gates have been installed at various points to prevent unauthorised access by motorbikes. The Greenway is also popular with runners and is used for educational, scientific, geological and archaeological studies, as well as geocaching.
The route follows the former railway branch line between Berkswell and Kenilworth Junction, which opened in 1884. The line provided a useful shortcut for freight trains travelling south, avoiding Coventry, and local stories suggest that it was also used to transport munitions during the Second World War. Several of the old railway bridges and other remnants of the line can still be seen along the route.
After the railway fell into disuse, nature gradually reclaimed the trackbed, creating a valuable wildlife corridor. Hawthorn, birch and other vegetation established themselves along the route, providing cover for birds and animals. Warwickshire County Council took ownership in the 1970s and, apart from widening and maintaining the path, much of the Greenway was allowed to develop naturally, creating the wooded and wildlife-rich landscape seen today.
