Llyn Rhos-Ddu to Moel Y Don Walk
8 miles (12.9 km)This walk takes you from Llyn Rhos-Ddu to Moel Y Don along the Anglesey Coast Path. The route begins from the car park at the lake near Newborough.... From here you head east, passing the village of Dwyran before picking up the waterside path along the Menai Strait to Moel Y Don.
Llyn Rhos-Ddu is a small freshwater lake set in low-lying farmland on the edge of the Newborough area, with calm waters, reedbeds and open views across surrounding fields. From the lake the route follows quiet lanes and paths through gently undulating countryside towards Dwyran, an inland village with scattered houses and views across to the mountains of Snowdonia on clear days. This part of the walk is largely peaceful and rural, with hedgerows, grazing land and occasional glimpses towards the tidal waters ahead.
After leaving Dwyran the route joins the shore of the Menai Strait, where the path runs close to the water with wide views across the strait towards the mainland. Tidal mudflats, salt marsh and small inlets line the shore, and boats are often seen moving along the channel. The walk finishes at the hamlet of Moel Y Don. It is a popular spot for watersports and fishing, as well as a starting point for coastal walks.
You can continue your walking in the area by picking up the Newborough Forest Saint Sand and Sea Trail and visiting Llanddwyn Island. Near Moel Y Don there's more Anglesey history at Plas Newydd.
