Morangie Forest Walk
13.4 miles (21.5 km)This circular walk visits the Morangie Forest near Tain in the County of Ross, in the Highlands of Scotland.
The walk starts from Tain train station and heads west through the town to the edge of the forest. From here, the route enters the peaceful woodland of Morangie Forest, where paths and forestry tracks wind through stands of pine, spruce, and larch.... The area is known for its tranquillity and the chance to spot wildlife such as red squirrels, roe deer, and woodland birds. The track rises gently through the trees, offering occasional clearings with views back towards the Dornoch Firth and the town of Tain below.
Further into the forest, the route runs close to the Aldie Burn Trail, where the sound of the stream can be heard running between mossy banks and shaded glades. In places, the path opens out onto higher ground, passing Tain Hill and revealing glimpses of the distant hills and the Morangie distillery area to the south. The return section follows a different route, descending gradually through the forest before rejoining the lanes leading back into Tain.
The walk provides a pleasant mix of woodland scenery, quiet countryside, and local heritage, making it a rewarding route close to the town.
