Ravenscar to Boggle Hole Beach Walk

2.7 miles (4.4 km)

This walk follows a section of the Cleveland Way from Ravenscar to the beach at Boggle Hole.
You have the option to return along the beach at low tide to turn it into a circular walk.
Starting from the craggy heights of Ravenscar, the Cleveland Way National Trail leads you north west along a stunning clifftop path with broad coastal views over the expansive Robin Hood's Bay. As you begin the approximately 4.4km journey, the route passes the fascinating ruins of the Peak Alum Works, an industrial heritage site where stone foundations and old cooling tanks mark centuries of dye-making history.... The trail continues across undulating terrain, offering clear vistas of Miller's Nab and High Scar as the pale cliffs of the bay draw closer. You will eventually reach the steep descent into Boggle Hole, a secluded cove where the trail drops down via steps and a footbridge to a rocky inlet and the beach. This area is steeped in local folklore, named after the mythical "boggles" or goblins said to live in the caves, and is home to the YHA Boggle Hole where you can find a dog-friendly café for refreshments.
It is possible to walk back to Ravenscar along the beach, but this must only be attempted at low tide. The beach section between Boggle Hole and Ravenscar becomes completely impassable and extremely dangerous as the tide comes in against the high cliffs, with no alternative exit points once you are between Stoupe Beck and Ravenscar. For safety, you should only begin this return journey on an outgoing tide and ensure you have enough time to complete the trek across the sand and rocky "scaurs" before the water returns. While walking the shoreline, you may encounter a colony of seals near Ravenscar; it is vital to keep a respectful distance and remain quiet to avoid startling them
