This circular walk explores the Dumfries House estate near Cumnock in Ayrshire. The expansive estate includes miles of fine walking trails with peaceful woodland, a walled garden and river trails along Lugar Water.
You can follow waymarked paths through mature woodland and open parkland with views across the landscaped grounds. The route also passes features such as the Chinese Bridge and the arboretum, where a range of tree species can be seen in a quiet setting.... There's 2000 acres to explore with fine views across the grounds to the 18th century Palladian country house at the centre. The house is noted for its original 18th-century furniture including specially commissioned Thomas Chippendale pieces.
The walled garden is a also a highlight, with formal beds and glasshouses, while riverside sections offer a peaceful stretch alongside the Lugar Water. The estate trails are generally well maintained and suitable for most walkers, with seating and information boards at intervals. Families will also find a visitor centre and play areas near the main hub of the estate.
You can continue your walking in the area by visiting the nearby Afton Reservoir or climbing to the viewpoint at Cairn Table.
