Great Yarmouth to Caister On Sea Circular Walk
7.3 miles (11.7 km)This Great Yarmouth to Caister-On-Sea Circular Walk offers a diverse 6-mile trek that showcases the contrasting landscapes of the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea coastline.
Starting just north of the station by Vauxhall Bridge, the route begins along the peaceful banks of the River Bure. Following the gentle curve of the waterway, you leave the urban bustle behind as the path transitions into open scenery.... This initial stretch provides a great opportunity for birdwatching, as you might spot grey herons or cormorants fishing in the tidal waters of the Bure.
Leaving the riverbank, the trail heads north across the undulating countryside toward the historic area of West Caister. This inland section of the walk offers a quiet, rural atmosphere where you may find yourself passing close to the atmospheric ruins of Caister Castle, a 15th-century moated fortress. The terrain here consists of a mix of country lanes and field margins, providing expansive views across the Norfolk plains. As you head east through the village of Caister-on-Sea, the air begins to turn salty, signaling your approach to the vast sandy beaches that define this stretch of the East Anglian coast.
Upon reaching the shoreline, the walk joins the Norfolk Coast Path for a scenic southern leg back toward Great Yarmouth. Walking along the wide, marram-grass-covered dunes or the firm sands of the beach, you may pass near the Caister Lifeboat Station, one of the oldest independent stations in the UK. This coastal stretch is a fantastic spot for wildlife enthusiasts, as the North Denes area is a known habitat for rare little terns during the nesting season. The final part of the journey turns west, leading you through the historic rows and seaside architecture of Great Yarmouth before returning to the familiar banks of the River Bure to complete the circuit.
