Scratby to Hemsby Beach Walk

1.2 miles (2 km)

This walk takes you along the beach from Scratby to Hemsby on the Norfolk Coast.
The walk is a straightforward and scenic stroll directly along the sand, spanning roughly a mile and a half between the two seaside villages. Starting on the wide beach at Scratby, you are flanked by low, crumbling clay cliffs that give the area its rugged and wild character.... The shoreline here is a mixture of fine sand and shingle, which provides a firm surface for walking, especially as the tide recedes. This stretch of the Norfolk coast feels wonderfully open and airy, with nothing but the North Sea on one side and the weathered face of the cliffs on the other.
As you head north toward Hemsby, the cliffs gradually give way to a series of rolling sand dunes held together by hardy marram grass. This transition marks the approach to Hemsby Gap, where the beach widens even further. Along the way, the natural environment is the main focus; you might see grey seals bobbing in the waves or find interesting shells and sea glass washed up along the tide line. The walk is entirely level and follows the natural curve of the bay, making it a relaxing way to experience the raw beauty of the coast without needing to navigate complex paths or inland detours.
The walk finishes as you reach the lively beach front at Hemsby, where the quiet of the shoreline meets the village's traditional seaside attractions. The transition from the peaceful, cliff-backed sands of Scratby to the broader, dune-fringed beach at Hemsby captures the varied nature of the Norfolk coastline in a short distance. Whether you are visiting for a quick blast of sea air or a longer day out, the simplicity of staying on the water's edge ensures that the focus remains on the vast skies and the rhythmic sound of the waves.
