Ipswich Waterfront Walk

5.2 miles (8.3 km)

The Ipswich Waterfront Walk is a recently launched 5.5-mile (9km) trail that serves as an extension to the King Charles III England Coast Path, allowing walkers to explore the town's historic river setting without having to cross high over the Orwell Bridge. The route acts as a scenic bridge between rural and urban landscapes, connecting the Suffolk Food Hall on the west side of the River Orwell to the east gateway at Pipers Vale.... Along the way, it passes through several of Ipswich's most cherished green spaces and historic docklands, featuring new commemorative oak benches and signposts crafted by local students
The journey leads through Holywells Park, a site rich in history dating back to medieval England and formerly owned by the Cobbold brewing family. Here, the landscape is defined by majestic trees and natural spring-fed ponds that once provided the water for Tolly Cobbold beers. As you continue toward the town centre, the trail opens onto the vibrant Ipswich Waterfront, where the historic 19th-century wet dock has been transformed into a lively promenade. This area is the soul of the town, blending Anglo-Saxon maritime heritage with modern cafes, bistros, and galleries that overlook a bustling marina.
Beyond the urban docks, the walk transitions into the wilder terrain of Orwell Country Park and Pipers Vale Local Nature Reserve. These areas are vital havens for wildlife, with diverse habitats ranging from reedbeds and scrub to alder carr and mudflats. Birdwatchers can often spot over 100 different species here, including skylarks, golden plovers, and peregrine falcons, which famously nest underneath the massive concrete spans of the Orwell Bridge. The path follows the riverbanks closely, offering spectacular views of the water and the engineering of the bridge from a unique perspective below.
For those looking to extend their trip, the trail provides seamless links to the Stour and Orwell Walk and the Gipping Valley River Path. The full circuit typically takes about three hours to complete, but the numerous waterside restaurants and refreshment stops along the Waterfront and at the Suffolk Food Hall make it an ideal route for a leisurely full-day excursion.
