Llansteffan St Anthony's Well Walk

1.7 miles (2.8 km)

This circular walk begins in Llansteffan, where quiet lanes and grassy paths lead you up towards the headland crowned by the ruins of Llansteffan Castle. The climb is gentle, with widening views over the Towy Estuary as you gain height.... The castle sits on a prominent hilltop and its walls appear gradually through breaks in the trees, giving a strong sense of the site’s long history above the river mouth. The approach paths skirt its outer defences before continuing around the hillside towards the coastal slopes beyond.
Further along the route you reach the Well of St Anthony, a small historic spring tucked into the side of the headland. The well has long been associated with local tradition, and although only simple stonework remains today it still sits in a peaceful hollow with views over the shoreline below. The path here passes through sheltered ground with patches of woodland and open grass, providing a contrast to the exposed ridge above. It is a quiet part of the route where the sound of the sea begins to replace the wind on the higher slopes.
The route also visits the open curve of Scott’s Bay. The descent brings the sea gradually into full view, with the beach stretching out in a gentle arc beneath the cliffs. The bay feels secluded compared to the main village beach, with wide sand, scattered rock outcrops and steady waves breaking across the shoreline. At low tide the beach provides easy walking on firm sand, while the cliffs above show layers of weathered rock and pockets of coastal vegetation clinging to the slopes. It is a peaceful place, often quieter than the estuary side of the village.
To continue your walking in the area, head west to visit the splendid town of Laugharne. Here you can visit two major highlights of the area at Laugharne Castle and the Dylan Thomas Boathouse.
