It is considered a hidden gem within Ireland's "Hidden Heartlands," offering a peaceful escape from more crowded tourist destinations. The forest is located on Sliabh Bawn mountain, which features two main peaks reaching up to 262 metres and is home to the Sliabh Bawn Wind Farm.

The forest environment includes a mix of tree species, such as water-tolerant alder and willow in wetter areas, alongside ferns, wood sorrel, and heather. Additional amenities developed alongside the wind farm include a trim trail for fitness, an equestrian trail, a raised viewing platform, and dedicated picnic areas
