2.5 miles (4 km)

This nice 3 mile circular walk around the Berkshire village of Pangbourne includes waterside stretches along the River Thames and the River Pang.
Walk Report October 10th 2026 By Claire Bennett:
We took our dog to Pangbourne for this circular walk, starting near the railway station and heading down towards the River Thames along the Thames Path. It was a lovely autumn morning, and the riverside was already attracting people out for walks, with boats moving along the water and ducks paddling close to the bank.... Our dog was immediately interested in all the new smells along the path and seemed particularly happy once we reached the open meadows.
Pangbourne Meadow was one of the highlights. The grass runs right down towards the river, with mature trees providing plenty of shade and open space for picnics. We stopped to enjoy the views from the riverbank, watching the boats pass and looking into the clear water where we could see fish beneath the surface. There were swans nearby too, which we gave a bit of room, as they can be surprisingly protective. It is easy to see why this is such a popular spot with local families, dog walkers and people who simply want to sit beside the Thames for a while.
From the meadow, the route turned away from the river and followed paths beside Sul Brook towards the countryside around Sulham Woods. The change was quite noticeable: the open riverside gave way to quieter footpaths, trees and fields, and there were far fewer people about. Our dog enjoyed investigating the woodland edges and stopping to sniff around the banks of the brook, while we took our time enjoying the more secluded stretch of the walk.
The paths eventually brought us towards the River Pang, which is much smaller and more intimate than the Thames. Following it back towards Pangbourne made a lovely contrast with the earlier riverside section, with houses and gardens appearing alongside the water as we approached the village again. I particularly liked the way the route moves between two very different rivers without ever feeling far from the village.
Back in Pangbourne, we wandered through the village before finding somewhere to stop for a drink. The Swan is a tempting choice after the walk, with its old-fashioned interior and terrace overlooking the river when the weather is suitable. It would be easy to spend longer here, watching the activity on the water before heading home.
This is a good little circular walk if you want a mixture of riverside scenery and quieter countryside without committing to a long day out. The meadow is an especially lovely place to linger, and taking the dog made it more enjoyable to explore the different paths at an unhurried pace. Between the boats and wildlife on the Thames, the sheltered paths beside Sul Brook and the smaller River Pang, there is plenty of variety in a relatively short walk.
To extend your walking in the area you could continue east along the Thames towards Purley on Thames and visit Mapledurham House. The estate is a lovely place for a stroll and includes a 15th century watermill. Around here you can also pick up the long distance Chiltern Way which runs through the area.
If you head west along the path it will take you towards Basildon Park. Here you will find 4 different waymarked trails taking you through 400 acres of parkland and woodland.

Pubs and More Info
The Swan dates back to the 17th century as is a fine choice for some post walk refreshments. There's a charming old interior with oak beams and three cosy open fires. If the weather is good then you can sit outside on the lovely terrace overlooking the river. You can find them at Shooters Hill with postcode RG8 7DU for your sat navs. The pub is also dog friendly.
The Wilder's Folly Walk starts from the car park in Sulham Woods. It will take you south to a noteworthy 18th century dovecote perched on a hill with some fine views over the surrounding countryside. There's also some nice bluebell woods in Boxgrove Wood and the Harefield Copse in this area.
