Berwick to Newcastle Cycle Route
This long distance cycle route offers a scenic journey from the historic town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed to the vibrant city of Newcastle. The ride covers a stretch of the well-known Coast and Castles route, which is popular for its spectacular coastal scenery, historic landmarks, and quiet country lanes.
The route begins in Berwick-Upon-Tweed, a picturesque Northumberland town known for its Elizabethan walls and riverside views. Situated close to the Scottish border, Berwick offers a charming starting point with its blend of history and coastal beauty. From here, you head south following the North Sea coastline, passing rugged beaches, coastal villages, and scenic countryside.
One of the highlights early in the ride is the option to take a detour to Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne. Accessible by a tidal causeway, the island is famous for its ancient priory and Lindisfarne Castle. It’s a peaceful and rewarding diversion if tides allow.
As you continue south, the route takes you through North Sunderland and along the beautiful Northumberland coast, offering wide sea views and a refreshing coastal breeze. Further along, you pass through Warkworth, where you can pause to explore the impressive Warkworth Castle, a striking medieval fortress set above a loop in the River Coquet.
The next section leads you to Blyth, known for its long sandy beach and quiet promenade, before continuing to the lively coastal town of Tynemouth. Tynemouth is popular for its beach, historic priory, and vibrant cafes, making it a good spot for a break. From here, the route leaves the coast and turns west to follow the River Tyne.
The final part of the ride follows a riverside path heading towards the heart of Newcastle. This section provides an enjoyable, traffic-free stretch with views of the river, bridges, and the city’s skyline. It’s a great way to complete the journey, arriving in one of the North East’s most exciting and historic cities.
