Birnam Hill Walk

3.2 miles (5.1 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This walk takes you to the summit of Birnam Hill near Dunkeld. The prominent Perthshire landmark offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
The route begins at the train station and climbs steadily through mixed woodlands, featuring oak, beech, and Scots pine. The peaceful forest paths are a haven for wildlife, with red squirrels and a variety of bird species commonly seen along the way.
As the path ascends, the trees give way to open moorland, and the views expand dramatically. From the summit, you can enjoy sweeping vistas of Dunkeld, the River Tay, and the surrounding hills. On a clear day, the distant peaks of Schiehallion and Ben Lawers are also visible. The hill is steeped in history, with connections to Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the famous Birnam Oak nearby.
The descent follows a different path, taking you back through tranquil forests and offering a chance to experience more of this varied landscape. The walk is moderately challenging but manageable for most walkers.
You can continue your walking in the area on the popular Hermitage Woodland Walk in Dunkeld.
