Burwell Fen Walk
This circular walk explores Burwell Fen in Cambridgeshire. The easy walk includes long waterside sections along the Burwell Lode and the Reach Lode.
It's a flat trail with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. The fen includes various habitats such as open water, reedbed, hidden dykes and ditches with rough grazing land for Highland Cattle and Konik Horses.
The area is also great for birdwatching. In winter there are large flocks of Eurasian Wigeon and other common ducks, with occasional visits from Whooper Swan and Bewick's Swan. You might also spot a Short-eared Owl hunting over the area. As spring and autumn arrive, the site attracts migrating waders. In summer, the air is filled with the calls of Reed Warbler and Sedge Warbler, and the distinctive reeling of a Grasshopper Warbler. Year-round, Western Marsh Harrier can be seen quartering the landscape, joined by Hen Harrier during the colder months.
