Coalisland Canal Walk

1.2 miles (2 km)

Open Streetmap This walk takes you along the Coalisland Canal in the town of Coalisland in County Tyrone.
You can start the walk in the town centre and follow the canalside path east along the water. The town was established around the canal in the 17th century due to the discovery of coal deposits in the region. Today, the canal's towpath has been repurposed into a scenic walking route, offering a tranquil environment rich in local wildlife. As you stroll along the path, you may encounter dippers and kingfishers near the water, and with some luck, spot an elusive otter. The surrounding flora includes a variety of native plants that thrive in the canal's ecosystem.
To continue your walking in the area head south east to visit the lovely Peatlands Park. Oxford Island and Lough Neagh can also also be found nearby.

The Coalisland Canal, also known as the Tyrone Navigation, is a 7.2 km waterway constructed to facilitate the transportation of coal from the Tyrone coalfields to Dublin. Initiated in 1733, the canal faced numerous delays and was officially opened in 1787. An extension, Dukart's Canal, was built to connect the Drumglass coalfields directly to Coalisland, opening in 1777; however, it was deemed an engineering failure and closed upon the main canal's completion. The Coalisland Canal experienced fluctuating traffic levels, peaking in 1931, but eventually declined, leading to its abandonment in 1954.

The Coalisland canal

The canal's historical significance is evident in the remnants of its industrial past, including old locks and bridges that once facilitated the movement of coal-laden barges. Efforts by local groups, such as the Friends of the Coalisland Canal, have been instrumental in preserving this heritage and promoting the canal as a recreational resource. In April 2008, a small boat rally was held, marking the first time in over 50 years that boats navigated parts of the canal.
