Its name means "Drewe's settlement on the Teign." The Domesday Book recorded it as "Taintone." Historically, it was known for wool production, limestone quarries, and a small tin mine, serving as a stop on the old Exeter-Okehampton road. Many buildings are granite and date from the 16th-18th centuries; the village center is a conservation area since 1972.
Points of interest include the 15th-century Holy Trinity Church, the village square, the Drewe Arms pub, the 16th-century Church House (village hall), and Lady House (oldest dwelling, 1542). Nearby are Fingle Bridge (historic granite bridge and inn), Castle Drogo (National Trust castle), Spinsters' Rock (Neolithic tomb), Prestonbury Castle (Iron Age hillfort), and Stone Lane Gardens (woodland garden with sculptures). The village has a shop, post office, playing field, and pubs/restaurants (The Drewe Arms, The Old Inn, Fingle Bridge Inn nearby). It's a great location for walking, with the Two Moors Way passing through and access to the Teign Gorge.
