Dundrum to Marlay Park Walk

5 miles (8 km)

Open Streetmap This walk takes you from Dundrum to Marlay Park, just south of Dublin.
Starting in the bustling village of Dundrum, you head south-west along footpaths that weave through residential areas and green spaces. The route includes a stretch alongside the Wyckham Stream, where the sound of gently flowing water accompanies your journey. The stream is bordered by lush vegetation, including willow, alder, and reed beds, which provide a haven for birds such as wagtails, kingfishers, and herons. In spring and summer, wildflowers such as meadowsweet and buttercups bring vibrant colour to the path.
Arriving at Marlay Park, you are greeted by a sprawling green oasis that spans over 300 acres. The park is known for its manicured lawns, charming woodland areas, and meandering streams. Mature trees such as oak, ash, and beech form a canopy over the quieter woodland trails, while squirrels dart between the branches above. The open spaces are frequented by starlings, blackbirds, and robins, while larger areas near the ponds attract mallards and moorhens. In summer, the gardens burst into life with roses, dahlias, and vibrant herbaceous borders.
Marlay Park has a rich history, with the estate dating back to the 18th century. At its heart stands the elegant Marlay House, a Georgian mansion that once belonged to the La Touche banking family. Though not all areas are accessible to visitors, the house and its surrounding courtyard often host events and exhibitions. The park is also home to a popular farmers' market on weekends, offering a range of local produce, crafts, and artisanal goods. The walled garden is another highlight, meticulously restored and featuring a collection of colourful plants and historic fruit trees.
The park offers sweeping views of the Dublin Mountains to the south, making it a picturesque spot for photography and relaxation. There are also excellent facilities, including a children’s playground, walking trails, and a miniature golf course.
The long distance Wicklow Way starts in the park. You could pick up this epic long distance trail to extend your walk.
