This walk takes you around the attractive grounds and gardens of Dunrobin Castle in Golspie.
The castle, perched on a hill overlooking the Dornoch Firth, provides a magnificent backdrop as you explore the estate.
The formal gardens, inspired by those at Versailles, are an exquisite highlight of the walk. Symmetrical pathways bordered by manicured hedges lead you through beautifully designed flower beds that bloom vibrantly in the warmer months. The gardens are framed by the dramatic coastline, with the sound of the sea adding to the tranquil atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Dornoch Firth and the surrounding countryside from various vantage points in the grounds.
The estate is rich in wildlife, with the coastal location attracting a variety of seabirds, including gulls, oystercatchers, and sometimes even puffins. Within the gardens and woodlands, you may spot smaller birds like robins and finches, while red squirrels can occasionally be seen darting through the trees. The surrounding grassy areas are frequented by deer, adding to the sense of a vibrant natural environment.
The castle itself, dating back to the 13th century, offers a striking example of Scottish baronial architecture, with its fairytale turrets and impressive stonework. Though the interior can be visited separately, its imposing presence is a constant companion as you wander through the grounds. The walk also takes you past the falconry area, where regular displays showcase majestic birds of prey, adding an extra layer of fascination to your visit.
The coastal setting of Dunrobin Castle allows for a refreshing sea breeze and views that extend far out over the firth. In the surrounding woodland, you’ll find paths lined with mature trees, some centuries old, and seasonal carpets of bluebells in spring.
