Gougane Barra Walks
This circular loop walk takes you through the beautiful surroundings of Gougane Barra Forest Park in County Cork.
Starting at the car park on the southern side of the lake, the route heads southwest into the peaceful woodland. The forest is a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees, including spruce, pine, and oak, creating a sheltered and tranquil atmosphere.
Following the paths, you'll pass alongside the River Lee, which begins its journey here in Gougane Barra. The gentle flow of the river, combined with the quiet sounds of the forest, makes this a serene experience. The area is rich in wildlife, so keep an eye out for red squirrels, foxes, and various woodland birds such as chaffinches, robins, and blue tits. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a dipper along the riverbanks, darting through the water.
The scenery here is spectacular, with views of the forested hills rising dramatically around the lake. As you continue, glimpses of the surrounding Shehy Mountains open up, adding to the walk’s charm. Depending on the season, the forest is alive with colour—bluebells in spring, vibrant greens in summer, and striking golden hues in autumn. The return route brings you back towards the lakeshore, where you can enjoy a final view of St. Finbarr's Oratory, a small stone chapel set on its own island in the lake—one of the most photographed spots in Ireland.
