Holwell Lawn Bluebells and Greator Rocks

1.9 miles (3.1 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This circular walk visits the bluebells on Holwell Lawn and the photogenic Greator Rocks on Dartmoor.
Starting from the car park below Hound Tor the path leads southeast towards the medieval village ruins, providing a glimpse into the area's rich history. Continuing on, the trail ascends to Greator Rocks, a granite tor standing at 371 meters above sea level, rewarding walkers with panoramic views of the surrounding moorland. From Greator Rocks, the route descends southward onto Holwell Lawn, a gently sloping area renowned for its vibrant bluebell displays in late spring.
The walk is relatively straightforward, with well-trodden paths and minimal elevation changes, making it suitable for most fitness levels. However, sturdy footwear is recommended due to uneven terrain. In terms of flora, Holwell Lawn is particularly famous for its bluebells, which carpet the area in a sea of blue during late May. The open moorland also supports a variety of grasses and heathland plants, while pockets of gorse and heather add splashes of color throughout the year. Fauna in the area includes Dartmoor ponies grazing on the slopes, and birdwatchers may spot species such as skylarks and meadow pipits. The rocky outcrops of Greator Rocks provide habitats for lichens and mosses, contributing to the area's ecological diversity.
