From here, it ascends into the rugged beauty of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and the rolling hills of County Kerry, with stunning views of mountain valleys and the shimmering waters of Lough Leane. The trail then descends towards Kenmare, a picturesque heritage town nestled at the head of Kenmare Bay.
Along the way, walkers encounter a mix of ancient pathways, forest tracks, and open countryside. Old Kenmare Road

Old Kenmare Road. An old route through the mountains from Kenmare to Killarney. Now easy to follow as part of the Kerry Way but still quite remote. The trail passes through diverse habitats, including woodlands, boglands, and heath. In the forests, walkers can find oak, ash, birch, and holly, alongside colourful wildflowers such as foxgloves and buttercups during the spring and summer months. The open moorlands are dotted with heather and gorse, adding vibrant shades of purple and yellow to the landscape.

Waterfall near Kenmare Old Road. Wildlife is abundant, with red deer often spotted in the national park section near Killarney.
