Ludgershall Castle and Collingbourne Wood Circular Walk
This circular walk explores the countryside and woodland surrounding the Wiltshire town of Ludgershall.
On the way you will pass the ruins of Ludgershall Castle which dates back to the early 12th century. There are also long woodland sections through Collingbourne Wood and Coldridge Wood to the north of the town. Both of these ancient woods are predominantly broadleaf and in particular beech. You can look out for a variety of woodland birds and even deer on this section of the walk. There are also lots of bluebells to see in the spring months. It's a great area for dog walking too.
Along the way there's some fine views of the North Wessex Downs and Test Valley countryside to enjoy.
On the eastern side of the walk you will also pass the small village of Upper Chute.
To continue your walking in the area you could head east to visit Vernham Dean and Upton.

Ludgershall Castle was constructed by 1103, and was one of King John's favourite residences, one of five outside London where apartments were kept ready for him. Three large walls still remain of the castle, which was turned into a hunting lodge by Henry III but fell into disuse by the 15th century.
