Arra Mountains Graves of the Leinstermen and Millennium Cross Loop Walk
This walk climbs to the Millennium Cross on Laghtea Hill in the Arra Mountains of County Tipperary.
The hill is located just east of Lough Derg and provides fine views over the lake and surrounding hills.
The walk starts near the historic Graves of the Leinstermen. This ancient burial site is traditionally believed to mark the resting place of Leinster warriors who fell in battle during the 10th or 11th century. and then heads north to the hill.
The trail then follows a mix of quiet country lanes and forested paths, eventually leading to the hill summit where the cross is situated. The Millennium Cross was erected in 2000 to commemorate the turn of the millennium and serves as a striking landmark overlooking Lough Derg. The area around Laghtea Hill has a long history, with evidence of ancient settlements in the surrounding region, reflecting its importance as a vantage point and strategic location.
As you ascend, the changing landscape offers a mix of open pasture, wooded areas, and panoramic vistas of the lake and its islands. At the summit, the cross itself is a focal point for visitors, providing an ideal spot to rest and take in the views. On a clear day, you can see for miles across the lush countryside, making the climb particularly rewarding.
