Ryde to Sandown Coastal Walk
This walk follows a section of the Isle of Wight Coast Path from Ryde to Sandown. The walk runs for just under 12 miles following the waymarked trail to Seaview, St Helens, Bembridge and Culver Down before finishing at Sandown.
The terrain varies significantly over the 12-mile course, transitioning from flat coastal promenades and seawalls to unpaved clifftop paths. Key geographical and historical features along the route include the tidal harbour at Bembridge, the low-lying wetlands of Bembridge Duver, and the steep chalk cliffs of Culver Down, which rise to 341 feet (104 metres) above sea level. This elevated headland is topped by the 19th-century Bembridge Fort and a prominent stone monument. The final leg descends from the down into the resort town of Sandown, following the beachfront promenade.
The route passes through several distinct nature reserves and marine zones, offering a varied habitat for coastal and cliff-nesting wildlife. The mudflats and saltmarshes around St Helens Duver and Bembridge Harbour are vital feeding grounds where walkers can observe wading birds such as black-tailed godwits, redshanks, and lapwings. The sheer chalk faces of Culver Down provide nesting ledges for seabirds, including fulmars and jackdaws, whilst the open maritime grasslands on the summit are a hunting territory for peregrine falcons and kestrels. In the summer, these clifftop chalk grasslands support diverse insect populations, including the chalkhill blue butterfly.
