Sherkin Island Walks
This walk explores Sherkin Island off the southwest coast of Ireland. You can reach the island by ferry from the small fishing port of Baltimore in County Cork.
On the island there are some nice walking trails taking you from the ferry harbour to the historic abbey and other points of interest.
As you walk, you can enjoy stunning views of Roaringwater Bay, the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, and the rugged coastline of West Cork. Other points of interest include Horseshoe Harbour, a peaceful cove perfect for a rest, and Silver Strand Beach, a sandy haven with clear waters. The island is known for its artistic community, with galleries and craft shops showcasing local talent.
Sherkin Island is also rich in flora and fauna. The mild, maritime climate supports a diverse range of wildflowers, including sea thrift, heather, and gorse. Along the coastal paths, you may spot seals basking on the rocks or swimming near the shore. The island is also a birdwatcher's paradise, home to seabirds such as cormorants, shags, and fulmars. During the migratory seasons, you might catch sight of unusual species passing through.
You can continue your walking in the area by heading to Cape Clear. The island is located just west of Sherkin Island and is significant as Ireland’s southernmost inhabited Irish-speaking island.
