Sherwood Pines Forest Park
Enjoy several waymarked cycling and walking trails in this large woodland area in Mansfield.
The cycle trails include a 3 mile, green graded ride which is great for families. The Adventure Cycle Trail is blue graded and runs for 6 miles - it's also a nice flat ride which is suitable for all abilities. It takes place on a super all weather limestone surface so you can try it at any time of year. For enthusiasts there is the red graded Kitchener Trail which is a much faster and more challenging ride.
Walkers can enjoy two waymarked walking trails through mature pine woodland and lowland heathland. The Dragonfly Trail runs for 1 mile and takes place on a well surfaced path. The Nightjar Trail is unsurfaced and runs for about 2 miles.
If you'd like to continue your exercise you could visit the nearby Vicar Water Country Park for more walking and cycling trails.
The Robin Hood Way runs just past the eastern side of the park. You could pick up the long distance trail and visit Rufford Country Park where there's 150 acres of historic parkland.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas
Just to the east is the International Outdoor Adventure Activity Centre at Walesby Forest and the worthy village of Laxton. It's a historic place and significant as being England’s Last Open Field Village. You can visit the 12th century church, the Norman Motte and find out all about the area's history in the local visitor centre.

This area on the northern edge of Sherwood Pines Forest Park is used by the Pines Park Archers club. It is laid out with various targets, one of which can just be made out at the end of the path. Signs warn when the area is in use by the archers.
Fallow deer at dusk. These were from a group of about 8 seen grazing just off one of the forestry roads at the northern side of the forest.
In its tranquil setting in an out of the way little corner of the forest, this seat is dedicated "in loving memory of William Peter Thompson, 1939-1999".
Sherwood Pines on a fine summer evening. The low sun in that golden state before it turns orange, and just enough breeze to make the trees whisper. They are lit up as if on fire. The undergrowth smells damp and earthy, with fox scent here and there. The bracken is tall, the foxgloves are making a last brave show against a backdrop of ragwort and thistles.

Deceptively fragile-looking, the birches of Sherwood Pines Forest Park withstood the storms of January 2007 much better than their stouter neighbours, the pines. Around 70,000 trees in total were brought down in the forest.
The trees of Sherwood Pines have put on a particularly glorious display of autumn colour this year, although at the time this picture was taken, it was getting past its best.
This play area in Sherwood Pines Forest Park appeared to be a fairly recent addition.
