Starting in the picturesque village of Shorwell, known for its historic cottages and the 12th-century St. Peter's Church, the route ascends onto Chillerton Down, a prominent chalk ridge in the island's central region. As you climb, expansive views unfold, offering panoramas of the island's rolling countryside, with glimpses of the distant sea to the south. The down is crowned by a distinctive television transmitter mast, a notable landmark visible from various points on the island. The trail meanders through open grasslands and pockets of woodland, providing a varied walking experience. The grassland is interspersed with areas of gorse and hawthorn scrub, providing shelter for various bird species. In the more wooded sections, bluebells and wild garlic create a fragrant carpet in the understorey during the spring months.
