Tama Lakes Walk
10.6 miles (17 km)
This walk visits the Tama Lakes in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. You start from the Whakapapa Visitor Centre at Ngauruhoe Place where you can pick up the Taranaki Falls trail. This takes you to the spectacular falls with great views to Mt Ruapehu.
The trail heads east to join with the Upper Tama Lakes trail which will take you up to the viewpoints over the lakes. The viewpoints reach a height of over 1400m so it is a challenging hike. As such it's important to wait for good weather.
The lakes fill two explosion craters on the Tama Saddle between Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngaruahoe. It's a beautiful area with attractive forestry, alpine plants, old lava fields and wonderful views of snow topped volcanoes.
