Tidenham Tunnel Circular Walk
This walk follows a scenic route through the Wye Valley, highlighting the disused Tidenham Tunnel, an evocative relic of the region’s railway heritage. Starting at the south entrance of the tunnel near the village of Tidenham, the route heads north along the Wye Valley Greenway and through the tunnel towards Tintern Abbey. The tunnel itself, constructed in the 19th century, offers a brief but memorable passage with a cool, dark interior that contrasts strikingly with the open landscape outside.
Continuing beyond the tunnel, the path gently ascends to viewpoints that offer expansive vistas over the winding River Wye and the surrounding lush woodlands. At these high points, walkers can appreciate the harmonious blend of natural beauty and historical legacy that characterises the valley. The route is well marked and accessible, making it suitable for families and casual walkers, with several rest areas along the way to pause and take in the serene atmosphere.
On the return leg you will pass the Devil's Pulpit where there are some fine views over the area.
The flora along the route is typical of the Wye Valley’s diverse habitats. In the woodland sections, native trees such as oak and ash provide a leafy canopy, beneath which bluebells and wild garlic carpet the forest floor in spring. Open riverbanks and meadows support an assortment of grasses and moisture-loving plants, while heather and gorse add vibrant splashes of colour during the summer months. The rich plant diversity attracts a variety of butterflies and bees, contributing to the overall vitality of the area.
The fauna is equally impressive, with the river and its banks serving as habitats for a range of bird species including kingfishers, dippers, and grey wagtails. These birds are often seen flitting along the water’s edge or soaring overhead, while small mammals such as otters may occasionally be spotted in the quiet, reflective waters.

Tidenham Tunnel south portal. A section of the Severn & Wye Railway route from Chepstow to Tintern has been turned into a footpath & cycleway. Steeply graded as it leaves the Gloucester-Cardiff main line at Wye Valley Junction ground frame, it climbs steadily to clear the A48 road before levelling off towards the 1km long Tidenham Tunnel. Low level lighting is provided through the tunnel so as not to disturb resident bats. The line emerges high up above the river Wye on a ledge that follows the bends in the river to reach Tintern Quarry. Beyond that you can continue towards Tintern Abbey
