Trenchford and Tottiford Reservoir

2.5 miles (4 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap Enjoy an easy walk around these two pretty reservoirs in the Dartmoor National Park. There are waterside walking trails running along the waters edge and then into surrounding woodland. The area is well signposted and there is seating and picnic area dotted around the walk. Look out for a variety of birdlife on the water and beautiful rhododendrons around the reservoir in the summer months. It's easy to extend your walk to Kennick Reservoir as this lies just to the north of Trenchford and Tottiford Reservoirs.
This walk starts at the parking area at the western end of Tottiford Reservoir and takes you along the waterside paths.
If you'd like to continue your walking in the area then you could head to the nearby Canonteign Falls where you'll find lakes, a wooded valley and a spectacular waterfall.

Pubs/Cafes

Head into Lustleigh and visit The Cleave Pub for some post walk refreshments. The delightful thatched pub has an attractive interior with features including a low-ceilinged beamed bar with granite walls and log fire. Outdoors there's a nice garden area to relax in on warmer days. The pub does great food and can be found in the village at a postcode of TQ13 9TJ for your sat navs.

Dog Walking

The reservoirs are a popular place for dog walking and you'll probably see plenty of other owners on a good day. There's also some nice woodland trails surrounding the water where you can take your canine friend. The Cleave pub mentioned above also has a dog friendly area.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

About 2 miles south west of the reservoirs you'll find the pretty village of Lustleigh. Here you can visit Lustleigh Cleave which is an excellent place to continue your walking if you have time. The lovely area includes fields, meadows, woods and riverside trails along the River Bovey.
A few miles east of the reservoirs you'll find the expansive Haldon Forest Park. There's miles of waymarked walking trails and mountain biking trails to be found here. The site includes the popular Mamhead Sensory Trail where you can enjoy some fine views over the Exe Estuary. At the northern end of the forest you will find Haldon Belvedere (Lawrence Castle). The site is used as wedding venue but is also open to the public on certain days. The fine looking castle dates from 1788 and is surrounded by some the lovely grounds and gardens. See the Doddiscombsleigh Walk for more details.

Trenchford Reservoir. Looking North across the lake in later summer 2008. There are very few viewing points around certain areas of the lake, in fact I get the impression that people are discouraged. Along the road a hedge purposely restricts viewing the reservoir. Obviously the number one priority is water, and with all this free rain we are having, and supply outdoing demand, drinking water will soon be very cheap!
