The route passes through Norton-on-Derwent and Sledmere across the rolling Wolds. Starting in Kirkham, the route offers views of the River Derwent and follows quiet country roads. It passes through picturesque landscapes before reaching Hunmanby, often called the gateway to the Yorkshire Wolds. From here, the views stretch over farmland towards the well-known seaside town of Filey. Route 166 is part of the wider 143.8-mile Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route.
