National Cycle Route 84 - Rhyl to St Asaph
This is the opening section of National Cycle Route 84 which runs from Rhyl to St Asaph in Denbighshire.
The signed Sustrans route runs south east from the coastal town, passing along the River Clwyd to Rhuddlan. The route then continues on another traffic free path to finish at St Asaph.
The route begins at the Children’s Village on the promenade of this popular seaside town, heading west in the direction of Kinmel Bay.
Before reaching the Blue Bridge, which crosses the River Clwyd at Foryd Harbour, the route loops back to pass by Marine Lake and its miniature railway.
Use caution when crossing the H-bridge on the road, but you’ll soon return to traffic-free paths through Glan Morfa Community Woodland—a local nature reserve situated between Rhyl and the River Clwyd.
Continue south along the route to reach the banks of the River Clwyd, where you’ll encounter abundant birdlife and enjoy views down the Vale of Clwyd, with the Clwydian Range AONB visible to your left.
A short detour in Rhuddlan takes you to the impressive castle, and the village itself offers a good selection of cafés and small shops. The route then continues towards St Asaph, running parallel to the main road before joining a riverside path along the River Elwy.
Cross the river into the park to relax, or head uphill to explore local shops, cafés, and the cathedral in Wales’ smallest city.
You can also extend the ride by taking the link south of Glan Morfa Woodland towards Brickfields Pond, another local nature reserve with a circular walking trail and sculpture installations.
The route links with National Cycle Route 5 in Rhyl. This will take you along the coast on a fine traffic free path.
