Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This walk visits Berry Pomeroy Castle near Totnes in Devon. It is regarded by many as the most haunted castle in Britain.
The ancient site is run by English Heritage and includes the atmospheric ruins of a 15th century castle surrounded by some pleasant woodland walking trails. It's a popular place to visit with a fascinating history and several reported ghostly sightings. There's also views of the Gatcombe Brook, a picturesque pond and some interesting limestone scenery to see.
There are good facilities at the site with a cafe, gift shop and car park.
The John Musgrave Heritage Trail runs directly past the castle. The waymarked trail runs from Maidencombe to Brixham, visiting several of South Devon's interesting historical sites on the way.

Dog Walking

The woods in the valley have some nice trails which are suitable for dog walking. The cafe mentioned above is also dog friendly.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

Totnes is only just over 2 miles from the site. Here you can enjoy a pleasant riverside stroll along the River Dart Valley Trail. The waymarked path will take you south along the river to Tuckenhay, Dartmouth and Dittisham.
Just to the east there's Cockington Country Park on the edge of Torbay. There's hundreds of acres to explore here with ornamental lakes, woodlands and formal gardens.

Berry Pomeroy church. A substantial church which shows the agricultural importance of this parish in earlier times. The room above the porchway is now used as an atmospheric office. The church dates from the 15th century and has been described as one of the most perfect in Devon.
