Dunree Head Walk
This circular loop walk takes you around Dunree Head in County Donegal.
The route includes Dunree Fort, a historic military site overlooking Lough Swilly. The fort dates back to the Napoleonic era and was later expanded during both World Wars. Today, it serves as a museum, providing visitors with insights into Ireland's military history and its strategic importance along the Wild Atlantic Way. The surrounding area features restored bunkers, artillery, and exhibitions that highlight the area's rich heritage.
The walk also takes you past Dunree Lighthouse, a small but picturesque beacon that has guided mariners safely through the waters of Lough Swilly for decades. Its location on the headland offers an opportunity to pause and take in the dramatic coastal scenery. From here, views stretch across the lough, with the Derryveagh Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. On clear days, you may also glimpse the rugged coastlines of the Inishowen Peninsula.
A small, secluded beach near the headland offers a peaceful spot to enjoy the sound of the waves and observe marine life. The beach and rocky shores are home to a variety of seabirds, including gannets, fulmars, and cormorants. At certain times of the year, grey seals can be spotted in the waters, while dolphins and porpoises occasionally grace the lough.
The walk is notable for its dramatic cliffs and rugged terrain, shaped by centuries of wind and waves. The headland provides panoramic views of Lough Swilly and the Atlantic Ocean, making it a photographer’s dream.
