Hoddom Castle Walks

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This circular walk explores the area around Hoddom Castle near Ecclefechan in Dumfries and Galloway.
The tower house dates to the 16th century and includes some pleasant grounds with riverside trails along River Annan. You can follow a circular trail around the castle taking you through woodland and along section of the Annandale Way long distance trail. Along the way you can look out for lots of birds in the woodland area and enjoy fine views across the river to the surrounding hills and countryside.
The site is now home to a popular caravan park where there's a good range of accommodation options, The Coach House restaurant and a golf course.
To continue your walking in the area follow the Annandale Way south to visit Annan. Here you can link up with the Powfoot Beach Walk and enjoy a stroll along the Solway Firth to the little village of Powfoot. If you head north along the river you could visit Lochmaben and enjoy a lovely waterside walk around Castle Loch.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

A few miles to the north east there's the climb to Burnswark Hill to try. There's an Iron Age Hill Fort and some nice views over the area from this historically significant hill.

Hoddom Castle. The castle is protected as a category A listed building. The lands of Hoddom belonged to the Herries family, allies of the Bruce family who were Lords of Annandale from 1124. It passed to the Carruthers family, and then to the Maxwells
