Lossiemouth Coastal and Forest Circular Walk
This circular walk explores the coast, rivers and forest to the east of Lossiemouth on the Moray Coast.
Starting at the harbour, you can take in the charming views of fishing boats and yachts gently swaying in the water. The harbour area itself is steeped in maritime history and offers a picturesque setting to begin your journey.
From the harbour, the route heads east along East Beach, a stunning expanse of golden sand bordered by rolling dunes. The beach is a haven for wildlife, with oystercatchers, curlews, and terns frequently spotted along the shore. The views across the Moray Firth are spectacular, and on clear days you might catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the waters.
Leaving the beach, the route joins a riverside path along the tranquil River Lossie. This section offers a more peaceful atmosphere, with the gentle flow of the river and the chance to spot kingfishers darting above the water or herons wading near the banks. The surrounding vegetation includes willow, alder, and wildflowers that thrive in the moist environment. Otters have also been known to inhabit this stretch of the river, so keep an eye out for their distinctive movements.
The path then leads into the forest area, a refreshing change of scenery with its canopy of pine, birch, and rowan trees. The forest floor is carpeted with moss, ferns, and seasonal blooms like bluebells in spring. Red squirrels can often be seen darting through the trees, while woodland birds such as woodpeckers and chaffinches add their songs to the serene environment. The forest is crisscrossed with trails that invite exploration, offering glimpses of wildlife and the occasional opening with views back towards the coast.
The walk eventually loops back towards Lossiemouth where you can enjoy refreshments in one of the fine pubs or cafes.
