Lynford Arboretum
Enjoy a short, peaceful stroll around this delightful Arboretum in the Thetford Forest area. There are three waymarked walking trails taking you to the arboretum's points of interest on well surfaced paths. This includes the Sequoia Avenue with its double rowed avenue of Sequoias planted in the 1800s to honour the Duke of Wellington. Other trees include Norway Spruce, Chinese Fir, Serbian Spruce and an ancient oak planted in 1671. There are also pretty man made lakes with ducks and geese in the southern area. The woodland is great for birdwatching too - look out for Nuthatch, Chaffinch and Pheasants.
The arboretum is located next to the historic Lynford Hall which includes 28 acres of formal gardens with a lake. To the south is Lynford Stag Walk which takes you through more of the surrounding expansive forest.
If you would like to continue your walk you could head to the nearby Brandon Country Park with beautiful lakeside lawns, a delightful walled garden and an excellent visitor centre. Thetford Forest is also excellent for more peaceful woodland walking.
The National Trust owned Oxburgh Hall is also nearby. The large estate has some fine trails taking you through peaceful woodland and delightful formall gardens.

There's a cute little Shepherd's Hut where you can pick up some refreshments after your exercise.
Dog Walking
As you'd expect the woodland trails are ideal for a dog walk so you'll probably see other owners on your visit. The site also includes a dog agility course they can have some fun.
Further Information and Other Local Ideas
Just to the south there's the interesting Grime's Graves and Weeting Castle Walk. This route visits two English Heritage run historical sites in the area. The first is a prehistoric flint mine dug over 5000 years ago where you can descend on a ladder to view the fascinating pit. The route then visits nearby Weeting Castle where you'll find the ruins of a 12th century manor house.

Lynford Arboretum lake. From the track along the south side.
This brick folly in the Arboretum does not appear to be very old, but may date back to the time when the area was part of the Lynford Hall estate.
Lynford arboretum near to Ickburgh Norfolk. The arboretum is on the south side of the road with limited car parking spaces with its picnic area plus many more parking spaces on the north side.
Formerly part of Lynford Hall estate, this area still retains features which reflect its 'parkland' origins. In the late 1940s, trainee foresters started planting trees which formed the basis of the Arboretum. There are now over 200 tree species, with future plans to increase the collection.
Tall sequoias at Lynford Hall. Planted 150 years ago, these sequoias are now magnificent trees which have grown to over 100 feet. They form an avenue which leads to the old Hall, which now operates as an hotel.
'Salutation' statue. This statue, by Nicholas Mynheer is situated near the centre of the Arboretum. It is dedicated to Thomas Marshall.
