Old Man Of Coniston Easy Route
This probably the easiest/shortest route up to the Old Man of Coniston in the Lake District. Please note it is still quite a challenging and steep climb.
The walk starts from the parking area at Walna Scar Road, just west of the village. From here you can follow footpaths west along the lane before turning north west up to the summit.
The trail weaves through a mix of grass and scree, with some sections featuring stone steps. Early on, you'll pass areas rich in Lake District flora, including bracken and heather, with occasional sightings of hardy fellside wildflowers. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as ravens, red grouse, and possibly even red deer.
As you ascend, views open up to Coniston Water and the surrounding valleys. The sight of Goat’s Water, a tarn nestled beneath the dramatic crags of Dow Crag, adds to the allure. This glacial tarn is a popular resting point for walkers and a hub for wildlife, with peregrine falcons often spotted in the area. From here, the trail becomes steeper, zigzagging upwards toward the summit.
The summit of the Old Man of Coniston offers panoramic views across the Lake District, including Scafell Pike, the Langdale Pikes, and the Irish Sea on a clear day. The remnants of old slate mining operations near the summit provide a glimpse into the area's industrial heritage, dating back to the 16th century.
For a longer walk to the summit see the Old Man of Coniston Circular Walk.
