Taplow and Boulters Lock Walk
This circular walk from Taplow to Boulter’s Lock follows a scenic route through parkland, riverside paths, and quiet countryside on the edge of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
Starting in the village of Taplow, the route heads west towards the River Thames, passing the grounds of Taplow Court, a grand Victorian mansion set in landscaped gardens. The house, now home to a Buddhist organisation, dates from the 1850s and is surrounded by parkland with fine views over the river valley. Its gardens open to the public on select days in summer, offering a glimpse of lawns, ornamental trees, and peaceful terraces overlooking the Thames.
From Taplow Court, the path continues west to reach the river near Boulter’s Lock, a well-known spot on the Thames close to Maidenhead. The lock is a lively place in summer, with boats passing through and views along the river towards Cliveden Reach. It has long been a popular setting for riverside walks and picnics, and there are benches nearby to pause and take in the scenery.
Leaving Boulter’s Lock, the route follows the Thames south for a short distance before turning inland to quieter paths that lead north through fields and woodland. The walk then passes near Amerden Ponds, a series of secluded waters fringed by trees that provide a haven for waterfowl and other wildlife. From here, paths lead back towards Taplow, passing stretches of open countryside before returning to the village.
You can continue your waterside walking on the Jubilee River.
