Tillicoultry Glen Walk
This walk explores the lovely Tillicoultry Glen at the base of the Ochil Hills in Clackmannanshire.
Known locally as the Mill Glen, the area offers stunning scenery, a rich industrial history, and diverse flora and fauna. The glen is easily accessible from the village, where you can follow paths north leading into its steep, craggy terrain.
As you enter the glen, you’ll be surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls fed by the Tillicoultry Burn, which has carved the narrow gorge over millennia. The glen was historically significant during the 18th and 19th centuries, as the burn powered textile mills that were crucial to Tillicoultry’s industrial prosperity. Remnants of these mills can still be found near the village, offering a glimpse into the area's past.
The path through the glen is rugged and steep in places, crossing footbridges that provide spectacular views of the waterfalls below. The dramatic rock faces of the gorge are home to mosses, lichens, and ferns, thriving in the damp, shaded environment. Keep an eye out for birdlife, including dippers and wagtails darting along the burn, as well as buzzards circling overhead. The path also offers views of the Ochil Hills rising to the north, providing a sense of the landscape’s grandeur.
Emerging from the Mill Glen, the route continues northward, ascending The Law, one of the prominent hills in the Ochils. This climb offers increasingly expansive views of the surrounding hills, the Forth Valley, and, on clear days, as far as the Lomond Hills and the Firth of Forth. The Law is covered in heather and grassland, supporting a variety of upland bird species such as skylarks and grouse, while wildflowers like harebells and buttercups add seasonal colour.
The summit of The Law provides a rewarding vantage point, with panoramic views of the dramatic Ochil ridge to the east and west. It’s a perfect spot to pause and take in the sweeping scenery before retracing your steps back down to Tillicoultry.
You can continue your walking by heading west to explore the nearby Alva Glen and Menstrie Glen. The popular Dollar Glen can be found to the east.
