Cheshire Cycleway - Route 70
This popular long distance circular cycle route explores the county of Cheshire on a series of country lanes.
The route passes Congleton, Macclesfield, Bollington, Great Budworth, Ellesmere Port, Chester, Beeston Castle, Bickerton, Audlem and Alsager.
Highlights on the route include a traffic free section along the Chester Canal towpath and a visit to the fringes of Macclesfield Forest.
The trail is waymarked with Route 70 signs.

Cycle Routes on the Cheshire Cycleway
- Chester to Neston - Follow the Cheshire Cycleway from Chester to Neston on this short easy route.
The route follows quiet roads and some off road paths which include a stretch along the Shropshire Canal and the Wirral Way. - Chester Canal Walk - Follow the route of the old Chester Canal on this waterside walk or cycle in Cheshire
- Northwich to Knutsford - This route follows quiet country lanes and the Cheshire Cycleway from Northwich to Knutsford.
The route includes a pleasant spell through Marbury Country Park with views of the Trent and Mersey Canal (below) - Knutsford to Macclesfield - This route follows quiet country lanes and the Cheshire Cycleway before a lovely off road stretch on the Middlewood Way takes you into Macclesfield
- Macclesfield to Congleton - This lovely ride follows the Cheshire cycleway through Cheshire

Further Information and Other Local Ideas
Around Chester you can link up with National Cycle Route 5. The signed Sustrans trail runs for just over 360 miles from Reading to North Wales via Cheshire.
Near Malpas and Chester the route crosses with Sustrans National Cycle Route 45, also known as the Mercian Way. The route runs from Chester to Salisbury through Shropshire and Worcestershire.
Just south of Macclesfield there's a run along National Cycle Route 55. This route runs from Ironbridge to Preston via Cheshire and Greater Manchester.
The Burton Marshes Greenway starts just south of Neston train station. The shared cycling and walking trail will take you south through the RSPB's Burton Mere Wetlands where you can look out for a wide variety of birdlife on the River Dee Estuary.
