Travel from Barnard Castle to the coast at Whitby on this long distance Sustrans cycle route.
The route links with the W2W Cycle Route.
This route begins in Barnard Castle, a market town on the north bank of the River Tees.
Mostly on-road, it passes through the Tees Valley, crosses Kildale Moor, and enters the scenic North York Moors National Park. The route continues through the hilly Esk Valley before reaching the coastal town of Whitby.
Traffic-free sections can be found between Commondale and Castleton, as well as over the Larpool Viaduct into Whitby. Cyclists can join or leave the route at various station stops along the Esk Valley Line between Great Ayton and Whitby.
Along the way, a visit to the 12th-century castle that gave Barnard Castle its name is highly recommended, offering stunning views over the Tees Gorge.
