Langholm Monument Walk

3.4 miles (5.5 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This walk begins in the town of Langholm, affectionately known as the "Muckle Toon," and heads east to the Langholm Monument, a striking landmark dedicated to Sir John Malcolm.
Malcolm was a prominent diplomat, soldier, and historian from Langholm, and the monument was erected in 1835 to honour his achievements. The stone obelisk stands proudly atop Whita Hill, visible for miles around.
The route also visits the MacDiarmid Memorial. This memorial takes the form of a giant metal open book and is dedicated to the poet Hugh MacDiarmid.
From the car park in the town, the path gradually ascends eastwards through a mix of open countryside and moorland. Along the way, the slopes are alive with wildlife, including upland birds such as skylarks, meadow pipits, and occasionally curlews. Red grouse are also a common sight among the heather. The surrounding flora shifts from pastoral grasslands to rugged heather as the climb progresses, showcasing the diversity of the scenic region.
As you near the summit, panoramic views begin to unfold. On clear days, the top of Whita Hill provides breathtaking vistas over the Ewes Valley, the town of Langholm below, and the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway. In the distance, you may spot the Solway Firth and even the peaks of the Lake District on exceptionally bright days. The monument itself, standing 100 feet tall, adds an impressive silhouette against the landscape.
This walk is moderately challenging due to the steady climb but is achievable for most walkers with a basic level of fitness. The well-maintained paths and open scenery make it a rewarding journey steeped in local history and natural beauty.
You can continue your walking in the area by heading east to pick up the Newcastleton Railway Walk.
