Grantown On Spey Circular River Walk

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This circular walk takes you along the River Spey in the town of Grantown On Spey in the county of Moray.
The walk starts on Spey Bridge just to the south of the town. From here you can pick up a riverside footpath heading east to the Old Spey Bridge. You then cross to the other side along the Speyside Way long distance trail. You can follow this shared cycling and walking trail west along the old railway line to the river where you can pick up another riverside footpath. Follow this north east and it will return you to the bridge.
You can continue the walk by heading into the surrounding Anagach Woods on the northern side of the river. The pinewoods are a good place to look out for wildlife including Capercaillie and red squirrels.
If you follow the Speyside Way south west you could enjoy more waterside walking around Loch Vaa and Loch Garten.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

The Dava Way starts/finishes in the town. The long distance trail runs along a dismantled railway line to Forres.
A few miles north of the town you'll find the peaceful Lochindorb. The loch has a good walking and cycling path running along its eastern side. From here you can enjoy views across the water to the ruins of Lochindorb Castle which sits on an island in the centre of the loch.

Anagach Woods. Three generations of Scots pine trees grow in Anagach Woods. These woods date back to 1766. Today the woods still produce valuable timber, and are of high conservation value. An extensive network of way-marked footpaths (Green, Blue and Red) provides access for walking this picture shows part of the red route footpath which is a walk of 5.5 miles.
