An Creagan Walk

4.2 miles (6.7 km)

Open Streetmap This circular loop walk explores An Creagan near Omagh in County Tyrone.
The walk begins at the An Creagán Visitor Centre, a hub of activity and a gateway to the natural beauty of the area. The route takes you through a variety of landscapes, starting with a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk that winds over the Creggan Bog Nature Reserve. The bog, a precious and fragile habitat, is home to a range of fascinating plants and wildlife. As you walk, you may notice the vibrant colours of sphagnum mosses and the delicate, insect-catching sundews dotting the bog surface. Heather and cotton grass sway gently in the breeze, adding to the serene atmosphere, while the calls of skylarks and meadow pipits provide a soothing soundtrack.
Continuing, the path leads to the community pond and garden, a charming area buzzing with life. Dragonflies dart over the still waters of the pond in the warmer months, and frogs can often be spotted basking near the edges. The surrounding garden is a carefully maintained space featuring native wildflowers that attract bees and butterflies, offering visitors a closer look at the smaller inhabitants of this vibrant ecosystem.
From here, the walk ventures into the tranquil expanse of Creggan Wood, where tall trees cast dappled light across the forest floor. The woodland is a mix of native species such as oak, hazel, and birch, which provide shelter to a variety of birds and small mammals. The understorey is rich with ferns and wood sorrel, and in spring, bluebells carpet the ground in swathes of deep blue. As you walk, listen for the rustle of red squirrels in the trees or the distant tap of a woodpecker at work.
The route then follows the course of the Glashagh Burn, a meandering stream that adds a delightful, soothing presence to the walk. The burn is lined with willows and alders, which thrive in the damp conditions. Watch carefully for the distinctive flash of a kingfisher or the gentle ripples caused by an otter slipping into the water. This peaceful stretch is perfect for pausing to take in the calming sounds of running water and the rustle of leaves.
Finally, the path loops back to the visitor centre, completing a circuit that showcases the diversity and beauty of An Creagán.
