Curracloe Beach and Forest Walk
This circular loop walk takes you along the beautiful beach and then into the attractive pine woodlands at Curracloe in County Wexford.
Starting at the Curracloe Beach car park, the trail leads through sand dunes that have been forming since the 1600s, stabilised by marram grass and other vegetation. As you enter the Raven Point woodlands, you'll encounter predominantly Corsican pine trees, planted since the 1930s to prevent coastal erosion and protect the adjacent North Slob lands.
The forest floor is rich with flora, including bracken and mosses, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, a native species thriving here due to the absence of grey squirrels, likely because of the presence of pine martens. Bird enthusiasts might spot crossbills among the treetops, and during winter months, the nearby North Slob attracts Greenland White-fronted Geese, with the reserve hosting about 35% of the world's population.
Emerging from the forest, the trail opens onto Curracloe Beach, renowned for its expansive stretches of white sand and clear waters. The beach's pristine condition has earned it Blue Flag status, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors.
The coastal environment supports various seabirds, and if you're fortunate, you might observe grey seals basking along the shore.
Throughout the walk, you'll be treated to stunning views of Wexford Harbour and the Irish Sea. The combination of beach, dunes, forest, and marshland offers a unique and varied landscape, reflecting the rich natural heritage of County Wexford.
