Davaar Island Walk

3.7 miles (6 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This walk takes you to Davaar Island, a tidal island off the east coast of Kintyre near Campbeltown. The fascinating route offers a unique walking experience rich in natural beauty and cultural history.
Accessible via a natural shingle causeway known as The Doirlinn during low tide, the island invites exploration of its diverse landscapes and notable landmarks. Before setting out, it's crucial to consult tide times, as the causeway is passable only during a window of approximately three hours on either side of low water. The walk begins with a crossing of The Doirlinn, a stretch that takes about 40 minutes to traverse. Once on the island, a semi-circular route of approximately 4.2 miles unfolds, encompassing varied terrains and points of interest.
The northern tip of Davaar is marked by the 1854 lighthouse complex, a testament to maritime history. This area also serves as a prime spot for wildlife observation, with opportunities to witness whales, dolphins, and basking sharks, especially during the summer months. As you continue, the island's cliffs offer expansive views reaching to the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig, providing ample opportunities for photography and quiet reflection. The southern and eastern coasts are characterised by tall cliffs and numerous caves.
Among these is a cave housing a life-size crucifixion painting, created in 1887 by local artist Archibald MacKinnon. This artwork, inspired by a visionary dream, adds a layer of cultural intrigue to the walk.
The island's interior is grazed by sun-blushed sheep, contributing to the pastoral charm of the landscape.
Bird enthusiasts may spot species such as golden eagles and peregrine falcons, while the surrounding waters are frequented by otters and various seabirds. The flora is typical of coastal environments, with hardy grasses and wildflowers adapting to the island's conditions.
In planning your visit, ensure ample time for the return journey across The Doirlinn before the tide rises, as the waters can cover the causeway swiftly. With proper preparation, a walk around Davaar Island offers a rewarding blend of scenic beauty, wildlife observation, and cultural discovery.
